Caring for destination

This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Carku Guesthouse is a meeting place where other highlanders gain experience and vision. A visit at Carku Guesthouse is a true workshop on sustainable tourism.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

A visit to Theth offers insights on how man has succeeded in striking a balance with nature despite harsh living conditions. Theth people will only offer what they grow, and prepare a cup of tea from herbs they have picked from the surrounding meadows. The Carkus, like the other families offering rooms in this area, are true community leaders who by their example and effort are able to demonstrate to the community the immense potential they have to offer. It is by visiting each other, by discussing and witnessing, that highlanders are gaining experience and vision, and the role of the listed families is crucial in opening up a whole new perspective for this mountainous region.

The Carku family was the first to open its doors to visitors during the rough period of the late nineties, when the first community tourism projects were initiated. Guests will find the perfect guide in Nona Age, who will recount interesting stories of her children, now grown men and women who attended schools in the big city and made it there, enabling them to gain a better understanding of the role of this family in the local community.
