C'kemi! Welcome to Shkoder & the Albanian Alps!
Shkoder is probably the most important historic and cultural centre of Albania. There is so much to discover about the Shkoder & Albanian alps on your Albanian tour. Throughout the ages, this city, built on a unique setting between the Shkodra lake, the Adriatic sea and the Buna river, has given birth and kept alive national myths, legends, customs, traditions, trade and culture.
If you are planning on taking a tour of the Alps, or maybe extending your journey over to Montenegro, Shkoder is an obligatory station that you will certainly enjoy exploring, always welcomed and assisted by its people, in more languages than you would expect. With a wide range of accommodation in Shkodra, no matter what you prefer, you'll be sure to find the best Shkoder Hotels here!
One of the best designed cities in the country, Shkoder has of late enjoyed massive public funding that has brought back to the city its former status and helped revive some of that special magic atmosphere Shkodra people are so famous for.
Due to snow the accommodations in the Abanian Alps are open from the end of April until the end of October. The accommodations in Shkoder are open all year round.
The town of Shkoder is the main hub into Northern Albania, the cultural and economic capital of the whole region and one of the biggest cities in the country. Shkoder is located on the south-easternmost point of Lake Shkodra (liqeni i Shkodrës), the largest lake in the Balkans, shared with Montenegro. The area is also watered by the rivers Drini, Buna, Shala, Kiri and Gemi and is surrounded by the Northern Albanians Alps, the so-called Accursed Mountains. With such stunning scenery you'll no doubt want to enjoy one of our Shkoder Tours, particularly our local village house trekking in Albania!
Shkoder is one of the most ancient towns in Albania; founded in the fourth century BC. The last king, Genthius, minted his own coins, set up an alliance with the Macedonian king Perseus and was defeated in 168 BC during the third Illyrian War by General Paul Emil. The historian Titus-Livy reports that walls, towers and dungeons protected Genthius' capital. However, it was seized and sacked by the Romans, but it was later rebuilt and became the centre of the province of Praevalitania. Such an interesting history you can read more about in our Shkoder City Guide.
The Albanian Alps look like a big cupola. While there are high peaks such as Jezerca, which is 2694 m high, there are also deep valleys. The terrain is crossed by numerous rivers and glacial lakes, which make it incredibly beautiful. It's a perfect destination in Albanian for some skiing in Albania! Our local travel portal also offers hotels in Valbona and hotels in Tethi, though these are more local and traditional homestays in Albania.
The region is blessed with the dramatic Alps that during winter get abundant snowfall offering cheap ski holidays in Albania. Travelling to the Albanian Alps is a wholesome experience that enthrals not only those who love winter sports and outdoor adventure, but also those who are intrigued by an unknown land, its people, its soulful music and the flavour of its culture.
